Sports Diver and Dive Leader

These two courses are the most common ones people take when joining as an already qualified diver.

Sports Diver provides you with a range of skills to improve your rescue skills as well as your own practical diving skills. You’ll learn skills including self-rescue, recovery of unresponsive divers, and basic life support.

Sports Diver also allows you to dive to a maximum depth of 40m, use Nitrox 36%, and complete in-water decompression.

Dive Leader continues this, focussing on leading inexperienced and experienced divers, dive management, and rescue management. You’ll be able to plan, lead and manage club diving.

How much does it cost?

The price of Sports Diver and Dive Leaders courses is in three elements:

  1. BSAC membership
  2. BSAC e-learning pack
  3. SSAC Cost

Items 1 & 2 are payable directly to BSAC.

BSAC e-learning costs around £40 – £50 per course. SSAC costs for Sports Diver and Dive Leader and more variable. As these courses are done at your own pace, the costs will be split up and paid when appropriate. For example, you will pay a small fee for doing pool training to cover pool hire, then you will pay for open water sessions on a day-by-day basis.

Dive Leader is especially self-led and involves lots of dive management and planning sessions as well as active, on the water management. Dive Leader is taken at your own pace and therefore is impossible to put a fixed price on.

SSAC Will Provide:

  • Pool sessions – qualified instructor, SCUBA equipment, tanks/air, weights, BCD, fins, snorkel and mask during pool sessions. Entry into the pool.
  • Open water sessions – qualified instructor, SCUBA equipment, tanks/air, weights, BCD, fins, snorkel and mask.
  • Revision lessons to reinforce e-learning

What’s Not Included?

  • Use of a dry suit or wet suit for open water dives, these are the student’s responsibility
  • Cost of transport, entry into diving centres or cost of the boat for open water dives
  • Additional open water sessions will be at extra cost
  • SSAC membership is additional, based on current rates and payable monthly.
"I was looking to run club dive trips and start instructing so this was the obvious next step. Dive Leader has also helped me to learn more about myself as a diver and expand my experience so that I can take part in more adventurous diving"
