What Lies Beneath? was an ambitious BSAC Southern Region initiative designed to encourage branches to explore, investigate and record unknown underwater sites along the South Coast. Rather than a traditional expedition built around a small group of experienced divers, the project aimed to be as inclusive as possible. It invited branches of all sizes and experience levels to nominate survey leaders, undertake archaeological and diving training and work as teams to investigate new sites. The hope was to inspire confidence, build skills and develop a spirit of exploration within ordinary branch diving.
The project brought together 18 survey leaders from 11 branches, and five branches completed full survey reports. Dacorum SAC, Eastleigh SAC, Leamington and Warwick SAC, Reading SAC and Wight Dolphins all produced detailed documentation of their nominated sites. Members undertook Nautical Archaeology Society training, BSAC skills courses and extensive planning and teamwork to prepare for their dives. Even when poor weather or logistics prevented some branches from reaching or locating their chosen sites, the process itself strengthened dive planning, teamwork and survey skills within those clubs.
Across the project the participating branches demonstrated real enthusiasm and determination. Their reports describe researching charts, managing boats, conducting marine life surveys and applying archaeological recording techniques on previously undocumented seabed features. The resulting records have been shared publicly and will be added to national datasets held by the UK Hydrographic Office and English Heritage.
The initiative also highlighted the challenges of running a large multi-branch project. Training availability, changing NAS course structures, weather delays and financial pressures all affected participation. Despite this, the project was considered a success and provided valuable lessons for future regional initiatives. It also left many branches inspired to continue exploring their underwater heritage.
Overall, What Lies Beneath? showed how much can be achieved when branches collaborate, train together and dive with a clear purpose. The project built skills, strengthened club communities and produced high-quality survey work that contributes to the wider understanding of the South Coast’s underwater archaeology.
